Brief

Nestled in the heart of Sydney's Bellevue Hill, Casa a Mano presented a unique opportunity. This complete knock-down rebuild project had to cater to a family with teenagers, balancing structured formal entertaining zones with relaxed areas for family connection. The location, a central hub between the city, beaches, and local villages, demanded a home that could adapt to diverse needs.

Adding to the complexity, the property fronted a busy street, creating some logistical hurdles throughout the build. However we benefited from familiarity with both the clients and the location. The client, whose friends had previously collaborated with us, knew our work firsthand.  We also held prior experience building homes on the same street, giving us an in-depth understanding of the site and surrounding community.

Outcome

Living up to its name – "Casa a Mano" translates to "House by Hand" – this project embraced a hands-on approach.  Many elements were built and crafted directly on-site.  The rough-textured render, hand-applied and rigorously sampled to achieve the perfect finish, exemplifies this dedication. Similarly, the joinery was built on a masonry substructure and then detailed and hand-painted on-site.

The materials used throughout were quite unique, often sourced from generational artisans employing centuries-old practices. Throughout the two-year collaboration, the aesthetic itself evolved alongside the client's desires. Inspiration shifted towards a softer, earthier feel, reminiscent of the rustic Mediterranean tones found on Italy's Pugliese coast.

The front section of the home caters to formal entertaining, featuring structured zones with a central rendered portal that seamlessly opens to the heart of the house: the open kitchen, dining and lounge areas – ideal for family connection.

Stepping outside, a wood-fired pizza oven was built, while generous entertaining balconies provide an extension of the living space. Descending to the lower level, you'll find a spacious rumpus room and a dedicated gym. The existing pool was preserved, completing this multi-functional haven.

Casa a Mano stands as a testament to a two-year journey of collaboration, meticulous craftsmanship, and a shared vision for a unique, handcrafted home.
